Sinomusanothando Community Development is a Non-Profit Organization, whose vision is to facilitate the realization of the potential of individuals and communities and enhance their ability to improve their health and quality of life in a democratic society.
Sinomusanothando is located in the heart of the most deprived ward in the EThekwini district, KwaNyuswa. It is about 35 kilometres by road from Durban’s city centre to the heart of the village. The organisation operates mainly within the KwaNyuswa village, in all its nine regions. Namely: Esidangeni, Kwamathebethu, Emondini, Ezitholeni, Enhlambamasoka, Mathebethu, Emabedlana, Emathebethu, KwaMayinga, and KwaShelele. KwaNyuswa , which has a population of approximately 300 000 which for the past 15years, has been reported as having the highest HIV prevalence rate in KwaZulu Natal.
Sinomusanothando was founded by the first and only medical doctor, the proud child of this village, Dr Thandeka Mazibuko. It has been very active in the community for the past 5 years, dealing mostly with:
- Orphans and Vulnerable Children Care Facilities
- Cancer Awareness Campaigns
- HIV and AIDS Awareness Campaigns
- Providing Free Medical Services On Site
- Rural Community Empowerment Programmes
- Educational Facilities for the Youth- Home visit
- Providing food parcels, Clothing and School uniforms
- Family counselling and medical assistance for those who are bed ridden.
- Women Support Group
- Poverty Alleviation Programmes : Beaded badges and ribbons, Sewing, gardening and brick making projects.
One of the highlights of the year, which we love to engage our children in, is our Christmas party.
Dr. Thandeka Mazibuko took the responsibility of addressing the poverty in the area by forming this organisation. It is common that the children of the poor become a poor succeeding generation, but this doctor is determined to continually prove this statement wrong. She is born of a domestic worker, went to KwaNyuswa schools and today she is the first African to specialise in Radiation Oncology in KwaZulu Natal. Poverty is associated with lack of human and financial resources, such as low level of education with associated low levels of illiteracy. This results in poor health status, low labour productivity, high crime and the use of drugs.
As part of the Sinomusanothando vision, the main aim is to engage communities in facilitating self-awareness, disease awareness, community empowerment, and positive behaviour change.
